This championship this year will be held on the Tuesday of our golfing break at Dainton Park. Once again, the competitors will be battling for the honour of wearing the Harris Senior’s jacket of winners, lifting (and arranging to get engraved) the Championship Trophy and, of course, slipping their head inside this year’s Harris Hat of Glory.
West Berks Golf Club – Sunday, 5th September, 2021
Following on from the recent event on 25th July, Peter has arranged another meeting for us at the same venue. Tee-time booked for 13:30 and the cost will be £25.
With just under two years since the last away day at Whittlebury, eight hardy players joined by the recovering Steve Mulford met at The West Berkshire course. They were not put off by the predicted rain, thunder and lightening which failed to materialise.
The team event was won by Sue Scott, Reg Brown, Steve Christie and Paul Needle with 84 points beating Dave Scott, Trina Brown, Peter Harris and Martin Sykes with 80.
Dave took the nearest the pin on 11th holing the putt for the sole two of the event although he did have another chance on the 14th.
Martin ousted Paul on the 3rd for ntp x 2 and Peter secured the longest drive on the 18th by dint of hitting the fairway. Neither lady hit the fairway from their tee set way back in the trees.
Individually those scoring over 30 points were –
Paul -16 out, 15 back, total 31
Dave -18 / 14 = 32
Reg – 14 / 20 = 34
Peter – 16 / 23 = 39
England Golf have been notified of Peter’s impressive winning score.
We will hope not to have to leave it another two years before getting together again
Probably late august / september stand by for news.
The nine participants including debutant Catriona attended the event in their pods and masks.
Monday saw a team event with the combination of Paul East,Steve Mulford & Nigel Wain winning with a score of 66 points. David Wain secured the sole spot prize making the 14th green in two shots.
With the last few holes completed in pouring rain the evening highlight was a spectacular double 🌈rainbow 🌈.
Tuesday dawned to better weather and saw the Mini Championship won by David with a score of 33 points. Trina achieved a treble -nearest the pin on 7th , a birdie two later – I think the 15th (only one of the trip) and runner up – 27 points.
Third on count back from Nigel was Paul. Paul also swerved the pm session to trawl the course/water/gorse to the tune of sixty lost balls (not all his I hasten to add). Team David/Paul and Peter took the team prize with 66 points.
Wednesday saw the best weather and jumbled playing groups with some finding nine holes 🕳 sufficient. Team Peter/Jane/Nigel were the last standing with Jane netting the ntp x 2 on the 10th hole and Martin Sykes ntp on 7th.
Overall a successful trip and we now move on to The Dartmouth in October where we hope for a COVID free host venue and reasonable weather.
Also stand by for an away day as soon as permitted

Tee Times for Dorset “Minor” Tour
For those joining Peter in May, please note that the tee times are as follows: Monday at 13:24, Tuesday at 10:44, and Wednesday at 10:17.
With some government potential relaxation of golfing / hospitality rules from 17th May – the day after planned start of our visit to the Dorset I have taken the following steps:
Moved the main event to September, potentially starting Sunday 6th at a venue to be confirmed – Golf Travel are exploring options here.
The May event will now take place on a slimmed down basis for those interested – starting Monday 17th May
It will be subject to “pods” of max six for accommodation/eating purposes.
It will comprise 2 nights and three rounds of golf at a cost of £252.
Please let me know if you would like to join me/the Wains for this or whether you prefer to wait until things return to some sort of normality.
I look forward to hearing from you with your thoughts.
With the new year upon us Peter wished to set out the current position with our trip planned to start on 16th May:
At present we have 21 participants who have paid deposits / paid in full / or somewhere in between for a booking in Lodge accommodation and breakfast & dinner plus 4 rounds of golf on site plus an away day at Bridport on the Tuesday.
Having spoken to the venue & Your Golf Travel I am told that, whilst the resort is closed due to Covid at the moment, they are hopeful that by May things will have returned to some sort of normality.
I do hope that things will work out and we can meet up again.
If you have reservations or wish to be added to the event please let me know.
To my very good friends, With the C virus likely to peak at/during/near to our proposed visit, and the certainty that some of our group will not be present for very good reasons, I have bitten the bullet and arranged with Your Golf Travel (our agents) to postpone the trip for 12 months. This will mean that deposits/payments already made will not be lost. Of less importance, it means we also secure more advantageous tee times for next year.
New date for 2021 is Sunday, 16th May. Full running order to follow. In the meantime we have those who have paid a deposit – who will not be affected – and others who have paid in full. If this is you, please let me know if you would like a refund/part refund or whether you are happy to leave things as they are for the interim. In the short term I will play things by ear in respect of the planned away-day on 18th April and hope that something can happen – probably on a golf-only basis. Also, and depending on how things pan out, I will look for a get together over one weekend in August/September. Stand by for more news. All the best, and please take care.
